What's holding you back at work?

You don't know your impact.

You don't know how you come across...you think you act and appear a certain way but others perceive you differently.

It happens at any age and experience. 

  • You've been very successful, but hit a ceiling.
    • Work has changed, management has changed - have you changed with it?
  • You haven't really made as much progress as you wished - but you can't figure out why?
  • You're new to work or returning from a long time away
    • What do you need to know and be aware of?

It's usually the stuff that other people think about you, sometimes say behind your back, but rarely say to your face.

And that's not always because they're being malicious. Oftentimes, we think we're being kind, polite, professional.

We deliberately don't point out the annoying habits and behaviors. 

I didn't know I did that!  Why didn't anyone ever tell me?

Sometimes people do point them out and you're just not ready to hear it. So you ignore all the subtle context clues and corrective comments.

I'm talking about a wide variety of behaviors like

  • You stand too close.
  • You talk too loud or too much.
  • You don’t speak up enough.
  • You seem insecure or lacking confidence; You say sorry too often.
  • You interrupt others. (Whoa, wait that one is 100% me).
  • You talk, and talk, and talk, without contributing anything meaningful.
  • You're negative & bring others down.
  • You don’t support the team/company/boss.
  • You always have to be right.
  • You expect a lot.
  • You complain and drop problems at other's feet.
  • You're overconfident.
  • You hog the spotlight.

This list keeps going.

I bet you're naming a few more in your head, too.

You won't do everything on the list. But I bet you can picture people who do act in these ways.

And these aren't problems if they happen occasionally. It's the repetitious behavior and attitudes that get you labeled and cause you to be overlooked, held back, or moved around from team to team.

This month, I’m breaking down the tough truths no one else is telling you. These are the subtle, often unspoken behaviors that quietly stall careers and damage team dynamics—things people won’t always say out loud, but that matter more than you think.
