Confidence: Build Credibility, Focus on Quality, Elevate the Situation
Jun 30, 2025
Leading others means you'll see both sides of the coin -
🪙the ones who come across as too confident, almost arrogant
🪙and the ones who lack confidence.
In fact, you may find yourself on one side of the coin depending on the scenario. Maybe you're very self-confident in your role & with your team but less confident in front of senior leaders? Or the reverse. Perhaps you excel in front of customers and leadership but lose your confidence in 1:1s?
The thing is that none of us is confident about every situation, all the time. Confidence levels fluctuate based on your familiarity and the level of challenge your facing and your mindset and awareness.
But you can build your self-confidence so that you're ready to face any situation.
And you can coach your team to the same.
You're aiming for the sweet spot where you're neither shrinking away nor running heedlessly towards risk and pushing past or stomping over others. You can confidently approach life and work knowing that you'll be fine, no matter the outcome.
Adam Grant talks about Confidence in his book Hidden Potential.
- Confidence tends to focus on Certainty, Quantity and Dominating situations and others.
- Aim better: create a level of confidence that focuses on Credibility, Quality, & Elevating self, situations, and others.
When it comes to behaviors, mindset and habits that may be holding you back at work, your confidence matters. You can and should build up your self confidence as an individual and as a leader.
