Signal or Noise: How to Know When You Can Trust Your Gut

Yesterday I fell down a social media rabbit hole with at least 50 different opinions on which skin cream to use. By the end, I had no idea who to trust and who was just trying to sell me something. We are saturated with noise, quick fixes, and confident voices.

Feeling sure is not the same as being right

And with all that saturated info, we are increasingly firm in our stances. We feel certain. But certainty requires evidence, not just a strong feeling. The skill of separating signal from noise is what lets you tell what is really going on from what looks like it is going on. The good news is you can build it. The better news is that two psychologists who rarely agreed figured out exactly when your gut is worth trusting.

The two conditions for trusting your gut

Daniel Kahneman and Gary Klein studied intuitive expertise and landed on two conditions:

  1. First, is the situation regular enough to send you real, readable signals?
  2. Second, have you had enough reps in that situation, with honest feedback, to actually learn from them?

When both are true, your instinct is earned and worth trusting. When either is missing, don't lean on the feeling. Challenge it. Go get more data and more points of view.

Same instinct, wrong environment

Here is how this plays out in real life. You know your hometown weather cold. A heavy gray sky means grab an umbrella, because you have been caught without one enough times to learn the pattern.

Now take that same confident read to a weekend vacation in the mountains, where a sunny sky turns to a downpour in minutes. Same instinct, new environment, no reps. You walk out the door with no umbrella and you get soaked.

Your commute works the same way. You know which lane to avoid on the hectic drive home without thinking. Drop yourself into a city you have never driven, and that gut goes quiet (or misleads you).

And remember, when you realize you don’t have the reps, when you’re lucky enough to be in the rooms where decisions are made but you do not yet have the experience, stay humble and learn.

This week, before you trust a gut call, run the two questions:

  • Have I been in this situation regularly enough to get real signals?
  • And have I had enough reps and honest feedback to learn from them?

Name the instinct out loud, then decide whether you have earned it.

Take it further and really sharpen your skills: Keep a short win log of the calls you got right, because negativity bias makes you overlook them.

Your gut is not magic. It is a skill built from every rep you have paid attention to.
