Givers All Around Us - You can Help Others Without Losing Anything Yourself
Mar 04, 2025
Thanks to a gracious referral by Dr. Joanna Dodd Massey, an author and expert on change management, communications and conflict resolution, I had the unique opportunity to attend speaker training school with Heroic Public Speaking in Lambertville, NJ.
During two jam packed days we experienced inspiration, insight, training, and new relationship forging. The attendees, hand selected by the school and their alum, bring a range of experience and expertise and their sole purpose seemed to be to encourage and lift up everyone around them.
It’s incredible to be exposed to and immerse yourself in a crowd of high vibe, energetic well-wishers who have accomplished so much and have more on their agenda. They don’t trip you or try to slow you down, instead they pause, listen, ask, suggest, and offer. Adam Grant has a very popular book about this called Give and Take; this was a roomful of Givers.
I went there to boost my speaking talents and left with a host of ideas on how to take the Helm forward and a network of supporters who only wish to see each other do well.
There’s an important lesson here.
We were all at the same school to learn how to be better public speakers. That means we are kind of vying for the same jobs and opportunities. And yet everyone seemed to understand that there is enough to go around, when you’re willing to share and support each other. One of the primary tenants in the school is that speakers get other speakers work.
This is something we can all take into our lives. How can we help the one next to us and not feel we’ll lose something ourselves because of it?
