What Presence Actually Is (And Is Not)

Presence is not a personality type.  It is not reserved for extroverts or charismatic executives. It is a deliberate practice with four distinct dimensions: physical (how you occupy space), emotional (mindset and the quality of attention you offer), cognitive (the clarity and conviction underneath your words), and energetic (the signal you emit before you speak). Each dimension can be studied, developed, and sharpened.

 

Presence Shows Up Everywhere, Not Just on Stage

Leaders often think presence matters during presentations or all-hands meetings. It does. But it also matters in the parking lot, at lunch, in the hallway, and on the shared ride to the airport. The moments where you think nobody is paying attention are often the moments people remember most. Presence is how you show up everyday, not just when the stakes feel high.

 

How to Build It Deliberately

Start with intention. Before any significant meeting or conversation, set your intention explicitly. Name how you want to feel, how you want to be perceived, and what outcome you want. Then layer in the physical: body language check before you enter the room, and again while you are in it. Practice stopping the mental swirl before you walk in.

Study leaders whose presence you admire. Note what they do and what they do not do equally. Try it on. Apply. Adjust. Dissolve what doesn't work for you and hone the rest. When you're ready to advance and refine, seek feedback from trusted colleagues and mentors.
